New Satellite Intelligence Confirms Severe Impact of Iranian Missile Strike on Saudi Military Facilities

Share

New high-resolution satellite imagery has confirmed significant damage from an Iranian missile strike on March 1 against military installations in Saudi Arabia. The primary target appears to have been Prince Sultan Air Base, which hosts U.S. air and missile defense assets. According to the images, the strike scored a direct hit on a key component of the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system: the AN/TPY-2 radar, often described as the “eyes” of the battery.

The imagery reveals extensive scorching and structural deformation to the radar equipment. Analysts note that disabling such a critical sensor would create a substantial gap in ballistic missile detection and tracking coverage for the affected sector. Replacing or repairing an AN/TPY-2 radar in a forward-deployed environment is complex and time-consuming.

The financial impact is substantial. The antenna array alone is valued at approximately $136 million, not including supporting electronics, infrastructure, and deployment costs. Tragically, the strike also resulted in the death of one American service member who was in the impact area. Pentagon officials have confirmed the loss of life, marking a serious human cost alongside the material damage.

The successful targeting of a sophisticated missile defense radar has prompted questions about the resilience of U.S. and allied air defense systems in the region when facing large-scale or precision Iranian attacks.
