Russia’s Oreshnik Missile Strike Hits Western Ukraine Amid Large-Scale Attack

Share

On the night of January 8-9, 2026, Russia launched a major assault on Ukraine involving dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones. Among the weapons deployed was the advanced hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile known as Oreshnik, marking its second confirmed use in the ongoing conflict.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the Oreshnik was fired as part of a broader operation targeting energy infrastructure and facilities involved in drone production. Moscow described the strikes as retaliation for what it claimed was a Ukrainian drone attack in late December 2025 on a presidential residence in Russia’s Novgorod region—a claim denied by Kyiv and questioned by some international observers, including U.S. officials.

Ukrainian authorities reported that a ballistic missile struck a critical infrastructure facility in the western Lviv region, close to the border with NATO member Poland (approximately 60 km away). Local officials, including Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi, confirmed explosions and damage to infrastructure but provided limited details initially. Some reports suggested the target may have been an underground natural gas storage facility or related energy site, leading to regional power disruptions.

The Ukrainian Air Force noted that the missile traveled at speeds exceeding 13,000 km/h (over 8,000 mph), consistent with the Oreshnik’s hypersonic capabilities. No casualties were immediately reported from the Lviv strike, though the broader attack caused fatalities elsewhere: at least four people were killed and others injured in Kyiv due to drone impacts on residential areas.

This was the second combat deployment of the Oreshnik, following its initial use against Dnipro in November 2024. The missile, capable of carrying multiple warheads and nuclear payloads (though reportedly used conventionally here), has been highlighted by Russian officials as difficult to intercept.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strike near the EU and NATO borders a “grave threat” to European security and urged greater international pressure on Moscow. Kyiv has sought an emergency UN Security Council meeting in response.

The incident occurred amid freezing winter conditions, with Russia frequently targeting Ukraine’s energy grid in recent months. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned of a potential large-scale attack earlier that day.
