Trump Administration Proposes Ban on Chinese Airlines Flying Over Russia for US Routes

The Trump administration has proposed measures to restrict Chinese airlines from accessing Russian airspace on flights to and from the United States.
Since 2022, following the closure of Russian airspace to American and several other foreign airlines in response to similar restrictions imposed by Washington, Chinese carriers have continued to utilize these routes. This situation has resulted in longer flight times and increased fuel costs for American airlines, creating what representatives from the U.S. Department of Transportation describe as a “competitive imbalance” between American and Chinese carriers.
The draft document states, “This will level the playing field between American and Chinese carriers,” and it allows a two-day period for Chinese airlines to respond to the proposed changes.
American operators have previously voiced concerns about being forced to reduce aircraft load factors and delay the launch of new routes, including flights to key destinations such as Mumbai, India; Tokyo, Japan; and Seoul, South Korea. They have also indicated that direct flights from the U.S. East Coast to China have become unprofitable under the current conditions.
